Internet Use

The Ketchikan Public Library offers Internet access once a day for up to 1 hour to library account holders or any guest with a picture I.D. You must be 14 or older to use the Internet computers.  Wireless (wi-fi) internet is available to all patrons, regardless of age.

To sign up for an Internet computer, please go to the Circulation Desk to sign in.  The library cannot take phone reservations.  One-hour time slots are available when the Library is open, and all computers shut down for the day 15 minutes before closing. Patrons may use the Internet terminals once a day only.  If you need help getting started or need to use the Internet for research, please consult with a Librarian. Library staff cannot assist with e-mail questions or problems.

To use the wireless, please pick up a password slip at the front desk.  The password is good for the current day, for one device. You can have as many passwords as you have devices.

Acceptable Use Policy

In fulfilling the Library’s mission to provide informational, educational, and recreational materials and services for the people of the City of Ketchikan and the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, the Library acquires, maintains, and promotes the materials and services and develops programs responsive to a community of diverse interests and needs. In this era of rapidly expanding electronic communication, the library must expand its capabilities to provide users with access to the electronic information which is available on the Internet and other information systems.

Transmission of any materials in violation of any federal or state laws or regulations is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to: copyrighted materials, threatening or obscene materials, pornographic materials or materials prohibited by trade secrets. Materials that might create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment are prohibited. Also prohibited are: Uses that cause harm to others or damage to their property, uses that could be called hacking, uses that could compromise the safety of minors, and uses that violate confidentiality of information.

The Ketchikan Public Library has no control over the information accessed and cannot be held responsible for the content or quality of the information retrieved. All Internet resources accessible through the library are provided equally to library users. Parents or guardians, not the library staff, are responsible for the information selected or accessed by their children. Therefore parents are strongly advised to supervise their children’s Internet sessions.

Please use good judgment and courtesy to those around you when using the Internet. Users may not change computer settings or otherwise tamper with the computers. If you experience problems with the computer you must alert staff immediately. Otherwise, actions taken on the computer will be construed as intentional. Headphones must be worn when accessing audio content, so as not to disturb others.  As with every service at the library, if you cause a disturbance in the library, you will be required to leave the building. If disturbances continue, you may be banned from use. Offences to this policy may result in the loss of Internet use at the Library.
